The geometry explained — and why it performs: The half-round cage occupies approximately 180 degrees of the bearing circumference, forming a precision-machined arc rather than a complete ring. To an observer unfamiliar with bearing engineering, this might suggest a compromise — half the structure, half the performance. 

The engineering reality is the opposite. 

In the specific automotive bearing positions where half-round cages are applied, the operative load zone is predominantly unidirectional. 

The lower half of the bearing assembly — the half that the half-round cage occupies — carries the meaningful mechanical load during normal operation. 

The upper half, in many of these applications, functions primarily as a retaining surface.
