Two failure modes. One integrated solution: The sealing ring addresses lubricant retention — preventing grease or oil from migrating out of the bearing cavity under centrifugal force, pressure, or thermal cycling. 

The idler gasket addresses contamination exclusion — blocking the ingress of dust, water, mineral particles, fiber debris, and chemical agents that would otherwise degrade bearing lubricant, increase friction, and accelerate rolling element wear.
